Phulchoki Day Hike Overview

Looking for a complete full-day wilderness hike inside the Kathmandu Valley? The Phulchoki Day Hike is the perfect choice. Standing at 2,790 meters (9,153 feet), Phulchoki is the highest hill surrounding Kathmandu. It offers a beautiful combination of deep forests, rich wildlife, and a stunning 360-degree viewpoint at the top including Himalayan panorama.
This hike is an excellent choice for nature lovers, bird watchers, and travelers looking for a short adventure. It is also perfect practice for hikers preparing for bigger treks like Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, or Manaslu circuit Trek.

Starting Point: Godawari Botanical Garden (1,515m)
Ending Point: Phulchoki Dada (2,790m)
Distance from Thamel: About 17 KM drive to the start
Hiking Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours up, about 3 hours down
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous (steep forest trails and stone stairs)

Phulchoki Day Hiking Route

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kathmandu in a private vehicle and drive you to the Godawari Botanical Garden. From here, the walk begins through dense, peaceful forests.
After about 2 hours of walking, the trees open up to show beautiful views of the valley and mountains. The trail has multiple shortcut routes made of recently built stone stairs. The final part is steep, so we keep a slow and steady pace. At the top, you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the snow-capped Himalayas to the north and green hills to the south.

Important Note: There are no shops along the trail. There is only a very small tea shop at the top that sells hot noodles and basic snacks. We provide a packed lunch, but we highly recommend carrying extra snacks and 2–3 liters of water.

Rich Flora and Fauna (A Paradise for Bird Watchers)

The Phulchoki forest is a protected, diverse ecosystem. It is a world-famous destination for bird watching.

Birds: Home to over 270 species, including the spectacular Himalayan Monal (Danphe), Satyr Tragopan, Barbets, Woodpeckers, Shrike and Eagles.

Plants: Dense forests filled with oaks, pines, laurels, wild orchids, and beautiful rhododendrons that burst into bright colors during the spring.

Wildlife: If you are quiet, you might spot barking deer, Assamese monkeys, mongooses, jungle cats, or even the rare honey badger, common leopard, or sloth bear.

Best Season to Phulchoki Day Hike

Phulchoki is open all year round, but your experience will change with the seasons:

Spring (March to May) & Autumn (August to November): Best Times. Clear blue skies, perfect mountain views, and comfortable walking temperatures. Spring brings beautiful blooming flowers.

Winter (December to February): Good trail conditions, but the weather is cold, and the top can sometimes receive beautiful snowfall. Warm clothing is necessary.

Rainy Season (June to August): The forest is very green, but the trails can be slippery, and clouds may hide the mountain views. Raincoats or umbrellas are mandatory.

Packing List for the Hike
Please pack a lightweight daypack with the following essentials:

  • Sturdy hiking boots or good running shoes with a strong grip.
  • Comfortable trekking pants and layers (weather can change quickly).
  • Lightweight rain jacket or umbrella.
  • Warm jacket (if hiking in winter).
  • 2 to 3 liters of drinking water and energy snacks (chocolates, nuts).
