Champadevi Day Hiking: Experience the Natural Majesty Around Kathmandu
Kathmandu Valley is a historical, religious, and cultural center. Domestic and international tourist like to spend their holidays here, drawn by the breathtaking Himalayan views, the local people, and the ancient monasteries and temples. This rich diversity is precisely why tourists come to Nepal for both short holiday and trekkers, always making sure to spend a few days in Kathmandu.
Tourists visiting Nepal for a few days often wish to experience nature up close by hiking in the hills surrounding Kathmandu after exploring the city's beautiful sites. The most popular one-day hiking destinations around Kathmandu are Nagarkot hiking, Champadevi, and Shivapuri.
Champadevi Hill, standing at approximately 2300 meters south of Kathmandu, offers a spectacular panoramic view. From along route, you can see the entire Kathmandu Valley, including the Patan and Kathmandu Durbar Square areas, Swayambhunath, the Bagmati and Vishnumati river corridors. On clear days, the panoramic Himalayan range to the northeast is visible, featuring peaks like Ganesh Himal 7400m, Langtang Himal 7200m, Dorje Lakpa 6800m, Gaurishankar 7000m, and even Mount Everest 8848m. This area, free from motor roads and human settlements, offers a perfect escape from man-made noise and chaos, allowing you to truly enjoy and connect with nature.
Champadevi Day Hiking routes
There are several routes for the Champadevi hike, ranging from easier to more challenging trails. The most common route involves driving to
(I) Pipal Bhangyang (near Hattiban resort) and then trekking ridge-by-ridge to reach Champadevi Hill, before descending to Pushpa Lal Park. This hike can take anywhere from 5 to 6 hours depending on the chosen path.
(II) Another popular route starts from Hattiban Bhangyang, passes through Bosan bhanjyang and Dudhpokhari, and concludes.
(III) A third option begins from Taudah and ends at Pushpa Lal Park.
Important Notes for Champadevi Day Hiking:
• Supplies: Once you pass Hattiban Resort, there are no shops to buy food or supplies. It is essential to carry your own water and snacks. After descending to the villages below, you can order meals at local homestays or drive to Kritipur for lunch at a restaurant.
• Safety & Guidance: The trail primarily winds through forests. We do not recommend solo hiking. As the area is home to wildlife such as leopards, bears, monkeys, deer, and various snakes, caution is advised. While no major incidents have been reported to date, we strongly advise against hiking alone, especially for female travelers.
• Wildlife: The forests surrounding the Kathmandu Valley are home to diverse wildlife, including leopards, bears, monkeys, deer, and foxes, as well as a variety of birds like eagles, crows, doves, barbet, parakeet, bulbul, kingfisher, tailor bird etc. You could spot them during your trek.
Best Time to Champadevi Day Hiking:
The ideal time for the Champadevi hike is from October to May. The monsoon season (rainy time) is less favored by some tourists as the forest trails can be muddy and slippery, with the potential for leeches. However, the winter months often provide crystal-clear skies, offering the best views of the Himalayan peaks.
Why a Guide is Recommended:
There have been instances of tourists without proper route knowledge getting lost or confused. Therefore, our company highly recommends hiking only with an experienced and knowledgeable guide. While some experienced hikers continue from Champadevi to Chandragiri and take the cable car down, this is a long and strenuous trek suitable only for very fit and experienced individuals. Inexperienced hikers should avoid attempting this extended route.
