Namo Buddha day hiking tour Overview
Spiritual Escape & Scenic Himalayan Views
Escape the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu for a peaceful, one-day spiritual journey. The Namo Buddha Day Hiking Tour is the perfect blend of natural beauty, rich Buddhist culture, and serene mountain landscapes. Located just a short drive from the city, this tour takes you to one of Buddhism’s holiest pilgrimage sites, perched beautifully on a hilltop overlooking the majestic Himalayas.
Whether you are a solo traveler, a family, or a visitor with limited time, this easy-to-moderate day hike offers a profound look into traditional Nepalese village life, lush pine forests, and authentic Buddhist monastic culture without requiring weeks of physical preparation.
The Sacred Legend and History of Namo Buddha
According to ancient Buddhist scripture, thousands of years ago, a generous young prince named Mahasattva (the reincarnation of Shakyamuni Buddha) was hunting in the forest with his brothers. He encountered a starving, weakened female tiger and her five newborn cubs. Moving with deep compassion and a desire for ultimate Good Karma, the prince sacrificed his own body to feed the dying tigress.
Today, the beautiful Namo Buddha Stupa stands on this exact hilltop to honor his supreme compassion. The five tiger cubs are believed to have reincarnated as the Buddha's very first five disciples.
Beyond its ancient history, Namo Buddha is a vibrant Vajrayana Buddhist University. The campus hosts hundreds of young monks who undergo a rigorous 18-year education program, including 6 years of Tibetan language studies (reading and writing), 12 years of deep Buddhist philosophy, and an additional 5 years of intense meditation practice. The institution is also globally renowned for preserving the ancient art of Tibetan herbal medicine.
Best Time to Travel for Namo Buddha Day Hike
You can do this hike almost any time of year, but for the best experience:
Spring March to May Rhododendron forests in full bloom; clear skies; pleasant temperature
Autumn Sept to Nov Crystal-clear mountain views; festive vibe (Dashain & Tihar); best overall
Winter Dec to Feb Chilly mornings but sunny days; fewer crowds; views still great
Monsoon June to Aug Lush greenery but occasional rain; trails can be slippery – not recommended for beginners
Expert tip: Plan your hike on a weekday to avoid local crowds at the monastery. Early morning start (7:30 AM) gives you the best light for photos and quiet meditation.

The best policy around the Stupa premises
Namo Buddha is the holiest site for Buddhists, so we kindly ask you to dress modestly, wear simple, full clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Speak softly inside the monastery and stupa area, as monks and pilgrims meditate here. Expect simple lunch (think dal bhat, noodles, or momos at a local teahouse), so don’t expect fancy restaurants. Also, please refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol anywhere near the premises. Your respect helps preserve the peaceful spirit of this sacred place for everyone.
