Hiking day tours around Kathmandu
Nagarkot is one of the best day tours around Kathmandu. It is situated at an altitude of 2175m from sea level which 35km from Kathmandu. It takes about an hour and half by private vehicle. It is popular for Himalayan peak viewing including Mt Everest and sunrise. Beside the mountain, there are some popular hiking trails. The most popular trail is Changunarayan temple to Nagarkot hiking (3-4 hr). The trail follows the cultural village, forest, Hindu temple, Buddhist shrines etc. The hiker would encounter goat grazing people, farmers working in the fiend and children playing around. There are chances to spot some wild animal and birds. The trail is gentle with mostly flat, some ups and some downhill. The other Nagarkot to Chisapani (5-6 hr). The Chisapani trail has many ups and downhill through the village and forest. The another one is Nagarkot to Dhulikhel which is about 4-4:30 hr. Walking to Dhulikhel is mostly downhill. Some people also drive to Nagarkot early in the morning for sunrise and return. There are restaurants available to order lunch or tea/ coffee.

Shivapuri national park is situated to the north of Kathmandu. It offers a natural hiking through the wilderness. The shivapuri hiking is about 5-6 hr to the top (2800m) and return. The views of Manaslu, Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Dorje Lakpa are best seen from Shivapuri peak. The trail follows through the forest and it is steep hiking to the top. You may encounter with wildlife while hiking like deer, monkey, jackal, leopard etc and many spices of birds.
There are different routed to the top, it is advised to go with experienced guide. You may encounter many locals for a hiking on Saturday and government holiday but rest of the other days seems quiet. You have to buy a national park entrance (rs.1000/ person) fee. There are no shops inside the the park. You have to carry your own water or snacks. Wear a proper (as per season) hiking cloth.
Champadevi day hiking tour:
Champadevi peak situated at an altitude of 2285m from sea level to the south of Kathmandu. The hiking starts after driving (45m) to the south (Pipal Bhanjang) and gradual hike (2hr) to the Bosan peak and descend 20m to Bhanjang and again hike an hour to the top (Champadevi temple). When you are at top, you have 2 options to going down (return same for 45m and descend 1:15 hr via Bosan village or continue to west ridge and descend (2hr) via Puspalal park.
The hiking is gentle through the wilderness. It offers beautiful Himalayan including Mt. Everest in the east to Manaslu to the west. The view of Kathmandu valley is stunning. You may encounter some wild animal like monkey, deer, leopard, beer, porcupine or etc and many spices of birds. The trail has some different options to start and also to finish. You are advised to go with an experienced guide. There is no shop for snacks or tea/ coffee except in public holiday. You are advised to bring your drinking water and snacks. Chandragiri hill is situated to the west of Kathmandu at an altitude of 2550m. It offers a stunning view to Mountains from Mt Everest to Annapurna. You can ride (10m) a cable car to reach to the top and explore around. There are other small excursions like 360degree cycling, Zipline, sky cycling, horse riding etc. If you would like to walk back or walk up and cable car return is also possible. There is a nice coffee and snacks shop for breakfast or lunch.
The cable car remain busy on a public holiday and other regular days are okay. Foreigners pay high (US$23 return) than local and do not need to stay in a lane. The cable car starts at 8:00 am in the morning and stop at 17:00 in the evening. It take about half an hour from Thamel or nearby.
