Tiger Nest Tour Bhutan Overview
The Tiger Nest Tour Bhutan is a profound journey to the heart of the Dragon Kingdom. This carefully curated package is designed not just to showcase the iconic Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery), but to provide a holistic experience of Bhutan's spiritual essence, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes across the Paro, Thimphu, and Ha valleys. We move beyond sightseeing to foster a deep connection with Bhutan's philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
The monastery is a sacred pilgrimage site, believed to be where Guru Padmasambhava (who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan) meditated in the 8th century. The current structure was built in 1692. The hike is a central part of the experience, taking approximately 4-6 hours round-trip for an average hiker. The 'halfway point' cafeteria offers the first stunning, direct view of the monastery and is a welcome rest stop. Horses are available for the upward journey only (subject to availability and regulation) and cover about 60% of the trail; the final descent and the climb to the monastery entrance must be on foot.
Tourist Visa & Sustainable Policy of Bhutan
It is crucial to explicitly mention the Minimum Daily Package Rate (MDPR) set by the government. This should be stated: "Bhutan's tourism policy is based on sustainability and value. The government sets a Minimum Daily Package Rate, which includes your 3-star hotel, all meals, a licensed guide, private transport, and all internal taxes. This rate also contributes USD $65 per person per night to the government's sustainable development fund. The visa itself has a fee of USD $40. As your licensed operator, we handle all paperwork.
Accommodations in Tiger Nest Tour Bhutan
We provide a minimum of certified 3-star accommodations that reflect Bhutanese hospitality and architecture. Hotels are comfortable, clean, and offer modern amenities. For a truly immersive experience, we highly recommend upgrading to a 4-star 'Boutique' or 'Heritage' hotel or a night in a traditional homestay (where available), allowing for deeper cultural interaction.
Meals in Bhutan
Meals are a highlight. You will be served a mix of Bhutanese and international cuisine. Ema Datshi (chili and cheese stew) is the national dish. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions in advance. While chili is ubiquitous, meals for tourists are often milder; you can always request the authentic version! Bottled water is provided throughout the tour.
Best Time to Visit
March to May (spring) offers blooming rhododendrons and clear skies. September to November (autumn) is prime, with festivals (Tshechus) and crystal-clear Himalayan views. December to February (winter) is cold but offers brilliant, sunny days and fewer tourists—perfect for photography. The monsoon (June-August) sees lush landscapes but frequent rain and potential flight delays.
Getting There & Flights
Drukair (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and Bhutan Airlines are the only carriers operating into Paro International Airport. Flights are subject to weather and demand. We strongly advise booking flights through us or in close coordination with us, as we have direct access to allocations and schedule changes. Land entry is only via Phuentsholing from India, which requires additional permit coordination we will manage.
Tour Guide
Your guide is your cultural ambassador. Licensed by the Tourism Council of Bhutan, they are fluent in English, extensively trained in history, culture, and Buddhism, and are skilled in managing the pace and needs of your journey. They are a key to unlocking authentic interactions and hidden gems.
Articles of Clothing (Packing Advice)
For monasteries, wear long pants/skirts and covered shoulders (carry a light scarf). Sturdy, broken-in hiking shoes are essential for the Tiger's Nest trail. Layers are ideal year-round. From November to March, a down jacket, hat, and gloves are necessary. We will provide a detailed seasonal packing list upon confirmation.
Booking & Payment Process
1. Agree on Itinerary & Quote.
2. Secure with Deposit (typically 30-50%) to initiate visa and flight holds.
3. Provide Passport Scans.
4. We process the visa clearance letter.
5. Full Payment is required before your e-visa is issued and travel documents are released. We offer secure bank transfer and, with advance notice, credit card payments (may incur a surcharge).
The Currency of Bhutan
The Ngultrum (Nu.) is pegged to the Indian Rupee (INR). Indian Rupees are widely accepted, except for INR 500 and 2000 notes, which are not. It's easiest to carry USD or use ATMs in Paro/Thimphu (Visa/Mastercard) to withdraw local currency. Major hotels and some shops accept cards.
Alpine Asian Treks – Your Kathmandu Advantage
The offer of seamless logistics, a trusted partner in Nepal, and our own hotel Green Eco Resort provides immense comfort and convenience for clients doing a combined tour.

Kathmandu- Paro Fly With Druk Air - Transfer To Thimphu.
Take a flight to Paro from Kathmnadu. In clear weather, magnificent views of the world’s highest peaks give way to the lush green Paro valley as you land. First gift from Bhutan will be the cool, clean fresh air as you step out of the plane. After clearing customs and visa control you will be brief by our guide and transferred to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. We then depart for Thimpu, the modern capital of Bhutan. The drive will take around 1.5hours. Thimpu has a population of about 100,000. The town is made up of just three lines of shops and is the only capital in the world without traffic lights. In the evening, we will visit the Handicrafts Emporium, where all types of Bhutanese handicrafts are made and sold, overnight at Hotel. LD
Thimphu Valley Sightseeing
After breakfast drive at Sangaygang, a field of Bhutanese prayer flags perched high above the city. Colored flags send prayers to the heavens and white flags honor the dead. Visit the Motithang Mini Zoo where you can see the National animal Takin research centre where these odd animals graze peacefully in a small protected park. Walk to the Zilukha Nunnery. Thimphu sightseeing continues with the Folk Heritage Museum (a beautifully restored Bhutanse farmhouse from the last century) and the National Painting School. Visit the Weekend market where vendors from throughout the region arrive on Friday afternoon and remain till Sunday. Here you will find indigenous goods, handicrafts, locally produced goods, etc. In the evening visit the National Memorial Chorten built in honor of our 3rd king Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (a wonderful opportunity to mix with the local population). All the buildings in Bhutan conform to national building principals and are beautifully carved and decorated. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Thimphu – Haa – Paro
After breakfast drive over the confluence to the forbidden valley of Haa (it was closed to tourism until 2002). It is the last valley of Bhutan bordering with autonomous Tibet.
